Rice cake with peanut butter

Question:

Hello Rabbi,
If one eats rice cakes with a lot of peanut butter and a glass of milk, what are he brachot and order? I am not sure what either rice cakes or peanut butter are.

If one added an apple, how would that change things?

Thank you.

Answer:

Hello,

The bracha on rice cakesח is controversial, if it is mezonos or hoadomo, and many  poskim say to make hoadomo on them.

Under normal circumstances, when one puts peanut butter on a rice cake, the peanut butter is there to give it a better flavor, however if you put on a lot of it, that would show that you want it as a food independent of the rice cake. Then you would make a separate bracha on the peanut butter. The bracha on peanut butter is shehakol, because the peanut are not evident in the peanut butter, however since you are also drinking milk, make the shehakol on the milk, and you will avoid any doubt, about making a bracha on the peanut butter.

If you are also eating an apple, you would say haetz on it.

Best wishes
