Teshuva for Stealing Tzedakah

Question:

What is the correct way to do Teshuva for someone that stole from Tzeddaka money when he was young but over Bar Mitzvah. He doesn’t know which tzeddakas they were because they were from a bunch of random tzeddaka boxes and it was many years ago.

Thank you

Answer:

Hello,

It is never too late to do teshuva.

You have two questions here, where to give the money and how much. If you remember what type of tzedakah it was, i.e. a yeshiva, tzedakah organization etc., then give money to that type of organization. If not, then you can give it to any tzedakah. Being that the amount is unknown to you, in order to atone for this you would have to try to calculate how much money you might have taken and then add to it, in order to make sure that you paid back whatever amount of tzedakah you took.

May HKB”H grant you a full kapara

Best wishes
