Question:
During the month of Tishrei the Ashkenazi custom is to do Hamotzi over round Challahs. Is it acceptable to use round rolls for Hamotzi, or must one use Challahs?
Answer:
Hello,
Round rolls are also fine, during Tishrei and the rest of the year. The bread that is eaten on Shabbos, is essentially the same as during the week, and we don’t specifically have to have “challahs”. The is a certain preference to eating from a bread that was raided from 6 strands. (This is because the two challahs that we use for the meal equal 12 (6+6), which is the number of breads on the table in the Bais Hamikdash.) Other than that there is no preference to using “challahs”.
