Grandmother's Yartzeit

Question:

My grandmother (whom I am named after) has her yartzeit on Friday. Am I allowed to fast on her yartzeit even though it is a Friday (I know I am not obligated to but I am going through a rough time and it would make me feel good to)? In addition, if I cannot make it to the cemetery, can I still ask her to intercede on my behalf when I daven? Thanks!

Answer:

Hello,

In general we do not fast on erev Shabbos, however if you want, you can fast until after the time of mincha, and have in mind that it should be a zechus for your grandmother. Regarding getting her to intercede on your behalf, you can give tzedakah, as a zechus for her neshoma, and that she should daven for you.

Best wishes
