Question:
I would like to ask a question, but I want to first give the background to the question.
There’s a supermarket that we patronize on a daily basis.
We have a moadon and use the machine that scans items.
Since approximately two weeks ago, the machine that we log into doesn’t work. I asked at the front desk why, and they said that it was because I once scanned my items and then didn’t pay.
I worked out that it must be that I once scanned my items and then the self service machines didn’t work so I went to the regular tills instead.
I explained this by the front desk, and the man tried getting me back into the system and so far nothing happened yet.
My husband went today to complain that it’s still not working and the man at the desk (a different man) said that he took from the shop without paying and they wanted to check the video camera, but it was too late.
We have no proof because when we checked the date of our payment it says a different price to what they claim. We worked out that it could be that I bought some extra items and then paid at the till. But there’s no proof.
We’re still trying to work on it, but the question I want to ask is that my husband doesn’t let me shop in this supermarket because he doesn’t want to shop in a place where they accuse me of thievery, and therefore by shopping there it would show that he accepts their false claim.
I’m suffering for this, because my husband now wants me to go a different shop further away, which is difficult for me.
He feels that this is the right hashkofo, my husband said that I can find out if this is takke the correct hashkofo.
Answer:
Hello,
My apologies but I don’t see why shopping or not shopping there is showing that you admit to the charges. I would suggest that you try to get a hold of the main manager, and explain things to him, that you are not aware of why this happened, and that someone should please check the cameras, etc. or whatever is needed to do to clear this up. You can explain to them that you have interest in them investigating this, because if it is true that you mistakenly took something, you do want to pay for it. If the store manager is Jewish you can also add, that such charges are a chillul Hashem, and an embarrassment to you, and you want this issue cleared.
Hopefully this, together with tefillah will, you get past this uncomfortable situation.
Best wishes
