Question:
Hello, I got married 6 months ago, and this question has been on my mind since then. I went to the jeweller to purchase the engagement ring and wedding ring, and I owed money for both. The week of the wedding, I had to take out money for both and I only had enough to cover one debt which was for the engagement ring. Part of the money could’ve fully covered the debt for the wedding ring, but I don’t know why I didn’t think about this then. Now I told the jeweller that the wedding ring has to belong to me according to the Halakha and as I left she said: “Okay don’t worry about it, the ring is yours.”
I came back to give her the money the next week once I was already married. Nothing was discussed, nor mentioned. I just gave her the money and left.
So my question is who owned the ring? And is my marriage valid?
Answer:
Hello,
Yes your marriage is valid. You paid for it, even though it was only partial, but you did give some money for it. Additionally you picked the ring up (hagba'ah), and now you only have a debt to the store, but the ring was yours. Additionally the storeowner said that it is yours.
You should have a happy marriage and build a bayis neeman b'Yisroel
