Two questions: 1) if my mother subscribes to Apple Music and I want a song that's part of Apple's catalog, can I download that song from someone who purchased it elsewhere, given that I'd be able to access it through my mother's Apple account anyway? Also, 2) since Apple allows up to 5 devices per subscription, can I download a song from my mother's phone, given that she got it from their catalog and we haven't yet hit the 5 device limit?

If your device is part of your mother’s 5 devices, then both questions are permitted. This is because it doesn’t make a difference if you got it specifically from downloading it from your mother’s phone, or a friends, since you are allowed to download it from your mothers computer.
