The missing married man

Question:

If I marry a man and then the man goes missing randomly a couple years later after we married. He hasn't filed a divorced nor has been announced dead. He has been missing for about a year now. When am I allowed to remarry?

Answer:

Hello,

This is a very difficult situation, but a Jewish married is only terminated if one of the two are determined to be dead, or they divorce with a get. Otherwise, the marriage is still in place and a married woman may not marry another man. Your situation is called an agunah, ( lit. an anchored, or chained woman) since she is technically chained to the fact that she is married and until the marriage is terminated by death or a get, she is stuck to it.

I pray that Hashem should help you exit this difficult situation soon.
