Question:
By the bracha of avos we bend our knees and bow at the beginning and at the end; by modim we bend our knees and bow at the end, but at the beginning we just bow. Why don't we bend our knees at the beginning of modim too, along with the bowing?
Answer:
Hello,
Good question. The reason why we don’t bend our knees when saying Modin, rather our body, and by the other three times we bend our knees when saying the word “Boruch”, and our bodies when saying the word “Ato”. The reason is because the word Boruch, has a few meanings to it. The simple meaning is blessed. However, there is another meaning to it, from the posuk "ברך לך תכרע", we bend our knees to you. Therefore, it is specifically when we say the word Boruch, that we bend our knees, which doesn’t apply to the beginning of the bracha of modim.
Best wishes
