- One of the reasons why some women have the custom to light an extra candle for each child is based on a gemora that says that a person who is careful about lighting Shabbos and Chanukah will merit children who will be talmidei chachomim. Therefore some women light an extra candle as a form of tefillah, that each one of her children should merit to be either a talmid chochom or marry one.
- The reason Ashkenazi women waive their hands in a circular motion before putting them over their eyes, is done as a gesture, like waiving to the Shabbos "come, come", as this is the time when she is accepting the sanctity of the Shabbos.

ראיתי בס' שבילי המנהג ח"א עמ' כ"ה שהביא מס' נוהג כצאן יוסף (מר' יוסף יוזפא קאשמן סג"ל מק"ק פרנקפורט מלפני 300 שנה) שהמנהג של הנפת הידים ג"פ להמחיש את קבלת השבת, אמנם בספר בפנים לא מצאתי.
