Can a Baal Koreh drink water during Leining in order to keep his voice clear before hearing kiddush?

Hello,
I am not aware of any special heter to drink before kiddush for a baal koreh. He should drink before Shacharis. Additionally, I was once told by a voice trainer, that it is helpful to gargle water five times as this will lubricate the vocal cords. He can do this before starting to read the torah.
