Broken engagement

Question:

Hi,

I was engaged a year ago. When we were engaged, we got an apartment and I don't fully remember the costs incurred (likely a realtor fee and a month and a half of rent). I broke off the engagement and did not deal with the money/payment for the apartment as it had been under the guy's bank info etc. Was it my achrayus to cover that cost of rent he laid out or can I assume he was mochel on the money (we signed a shtar mechila a long time ago). If it is my responsibility to have paid the rent because I was the one to break it off, do I have to go approach the guy a year later and offer money for what he put down so long ago (he is married and it is awkward/embarrassing do so.. please advise) ?

Answer:

Hello,

It is most probably your achrayius to cover your part of the rent. The shtar mechila usually is for the emotional pain, and not for the monetary obligations. You can ask a mutual friend to speak to him about this, and if he says that nevertheless he is mochel, then you wouldn’t have to do anything else.

Hashem should help you find your zivug soon
