Breathing

The Midrash tells us that a person must praise Hashem על כל נשימה ונשימה, for each breath.[1] Breathing, often overlooked, can serve many profound functions in our lives. While most people rarely give breathing much thought, it can be a versatile tool with numerous applications.

Before davening, conscious breathing can help focus the mind and get us to become present prior to entering the words of tefillah. Deep breathing can alleviate stress and calm the mind, making it a valuable resource for navigating life's challenges. Deep breaths can also energize the body before exercise, while calming breaths can be beneficial before difficult conversations. Mindful breathing techniques can also assist in managing anxiety. Slow, deep breaths can prepare the body for restful sleep.

In light of these insights, we can understand a deeper meaning in the directive of the Midrash to praise Hashem על כל נשימה ונשימה. It can be understood that one should praise Hashem not only for the mere act of breathing but also for the diverse ways breathing can enrich and positively impacts our lives.
