I presume since there is no obligation (and possibly even sometimes frowned upon) for a man to wear a wedding ring - the custom of not having holes in the band does not apply to a mans ring which is just decoration and only to a woman’s ring which needs to be solid?

Hello,
There is definitely no obligation for the woman to give a wedding ring to the man. In fact, according to one of the biggest halachic authorities in the last century, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, if the woman gives the man a ring under the chuppah as a part of the wedding ceremony it will invalidate the man’s giving the ring to the woman.
If the woman would like to give the man a present after the chuppah is over, and it is clear that it isn’t order to establish them as married to each other, then she may give him this present. Under such conditions, being that it isn’t a ring that is establishing the marriage, it can be any shape they please.
