Maaser and savings account

Question:

If my income does not cover my normal expenses I was told I can use my maaser money to cover my expenses. Can I do that even if i have a savings account, or must I first use up the savings account first before I use my maaser to cover my expenses?

Answer:

Hello,

Regarding your question; without getting into the issue if one can take their own maaser, regarding taking tzedakah even from other. It depends on the amount of money you have in savings. If you have a year’s worth of money in savings, then you would not be eligible to take tzedakah. However, if you were told that you can use your own maaser money, your question included the fact that you don’t have that amount in savings. In that case you do not have to use up all your savings before using your own maaser.

Best wishes
