Question:
One is very particular about their dignity and they feel uncomfortable if they are not dressed smartly. If he gets a stain on his clothing on shabbos and there is no other alternative can one wet it with a towel to clean it.
Answer:
Hello,
I'm afraid not.
Wetting a garment especially to clean it is one of the 39 forbidden melachos, (called "melaben") that we must refrain from doing on Shabbos.
It is true, that you will look less dignified as a result, and it will bother you, but just remember that keeping the Shabbos, even when inconvenient, is at the core of being a Jew. We are taught that the reward given for keeping Shabbos and the other mitzvos, is given according to the effort, put into it. Our sages tell us that the reward for doing mitzvos in challenging situations is soo great that when a person will get to the next world, he will complain, " why wasn't I given more difficult situations so I could get more of this tremendous reward. Yes, it will be a challenge, but it will be worth your while.
Best wishes
