Question:
- Is it permitted to remove clothes from a dryer on Shabbos either to wear them or put them away.
- Also, if it is permitted to turn the dryer drum to look for specific clothing to wear, or is it considered muktzah?
- Similarly, if it is permitted to put used clothing in the washer on Shabbos.

- A dryer regarding muktza is considered a kli shemilachto l’issur[1], therefore its door is also a kli shemilachto l’issur. Therefore, it is permitted to open the door to remove the clothing, because it is moving the door “ l’tzoech mikomo”, because you need the place of the door, in order to access the clothing. Closing the door would be permitted if it is in the way of people who need to walk there.
- Turning the drum, in order to get to the clothes inside it is also permitted[2].
- It is permitted to put dirty clothing in the washing machine ( if it doesn’t have water in it) if you usually use the washing machine as your hamper. However if you don’t usually do so, rather you are making it easier to do the laundry after Shabbos, it would be considered preparing for after Shabbos, and not permitted[3]. After placing the clothing in the machine, the door may not be closed as it is also a kli shemilachto l’issur, unless you need the use of the door, ( to keep the smell of the clothing inside the machine). Additionally, if the open door is getting in the way of people that want to walk there, it may be closed, (as then it is being moved because you need it’s place, (l’tzoreh m’komo).
