Question:
I know this isn’t the place for lomdish questions but a recent answer on this site referenced kares (m’drabonon). It’s well worked out how the rabanan have the power to give makkos, misas beis din, etc. but those are physical. Where does kares mi’d’rabanan come from, how does it metaphysically work for the rabanan to give kares, and what’s the difference between kares d’oreisa and kares d’rabanan?
Answer:
It isn’t the “Rabbis” who created this, rather it is a term used when there is a Kares that isn’t mentioned specifically in the Torah, rather it is something that the Prophets and Rabbis knew from the oral Torah. Regarding a person who has relations with a gentile woman, see Melachi chap. 2 verse 11-12, and Tractate Sanhedrim 82A, Rambam Isurie Biah 12-6, Shulchan Aruch Even Haezer 16-2.
