Question:
Dear Rabbi,
When I wrap tefillin, I go over the ledge on the shel yad to make two wraps before I proceed to the seven on my arm.
I just was informed by my Rabbi that despite Chabad instruction where I learned, we do not want to go over the ledge. There are no two more upper arm wraps and we go right on to the lower arm. But more so, the direction of the wrap my new instruction feels is in the orthodox other direction on the arm.
I have tried the new tefillin wrap and it bothers my dreaming placed prayer. Is there a case for the chabad instruction or should I make every effort to reform to a new method of tefillin wrap. I went back to my initial way and think I feel ok. I really do not like wrapping it in the other direction.
I have been wrapping tefillin for nineteen years.
Answer:
Hello,
There are different customs. If y the people who assisted you to become orthodox were from Chabad, you can keep their custom, and continue wrapping the Tefillin the way you are used to.
Best wishes
