Using ai for parnossa

Question:

One of the wonders of modern technology is the development of ai (artificial intelligence) which can be employed in a myriad of ways, and has already made great contributions across the full spectrum of science and medicine and engineering and knowledge and so on.

So the question has come up for someone like myself who does not have any parnossa, nor any official qualifications to be employed in a position which requires some kind of license or degree.

However, it is now possible to use an ai to do the work for you so to speak.

For example I love working on seforim to find the mekoros and write extensive footnotes and whatever extra research is needed, but I am not good at standard editing or translating or transcribing, so I usually turn down any work that involves these three tasks.

Now with the advent of the ai, it can simply do all of these tasks very easily and more speedily than any person could, so am I permitted to take on a sefer job that will require any or all of these tasks which I normally do not do because it is too difficult for me, and accomplish them by using an ai, and do I have to inform the person that is hiring me that I will be using an ai instead of doing it all myself?

Of course there is always a small percentage that a person has to do to review and make the final edit ready for the next step, but the majority of the work will be done by an ai.

An additional question along these lines, is to do something which is completely out of my normal parameters, for example I am not good with numbers, so could I take on a job that involves some aspect of accounting and just put everything through the ai, even though I could not do any of these computations and calculations myself, or similar jobs which are not within my normal capabilities and for which I have no training or educational background?

Answer:

Hello,

Essentially there are two issues here, gneivas daas, fooling the employer, customer, and possibly geneiva, if he you are giving the customer or your employer inferior work. As far a geneivas daas is concerned, that would not be an issue as nowadays everyone knows that many things can be done via ai, therefore you aren’t fooling the employer. If he asks, if you have a degree etc., you may not lie.

Additionally, if it is work in a field that usually needs a degree, you have to make sure that the quality of the work will be on the level of a person with a degree or otherwise on the level of people who have learnt the subject for which you are providing the service.

Best wishes
