Davening

Question:

May a person daven to go out with a specific person if they think it is shayach for them? Is one allowed to daven for a specific outcome of a situation? And, does Hashem grant them such an outcome even if it is not good for them?
Thank you in advance!

Answer:

Hello,

It is not smart to daven to date a specific person, even though you like them, because there may be plenty of factors why marrying this person might not be good for you. Therefore we daven to Hashem that he should send us along the right path, and if this person is the right one for you, then it should happen, but if it isn’t then it shouldn’t! There is a rule, “B’derech sh’adom roteh bo, molichin oso”, that a person is let along the path that they choose. This can even be if the path the person is choosing is not good for them! For example, davening to be rich. It is possible that the nisyonos of being rich, will lead the person to all sorts of distractions in life, and aveiros, and cause the person to distance themself from Hashem. But if a person davens enough for it, and works on it, he just might be given his request. Therefore, in general we daven to Hashem, that this is what we want, but if Hashem sees that it isn’t good for me that it should not be given.

Hashem should send you your bashert soon.

Best wishes
