Question:

Hi, often times me and others I know get up on time for krias Shema, and say brochos and often times korbanos, but for whatever reason do other stuff afterwards, before davening fully.
Sometimes because of the other stuff (which may or may not be "wasting time"), the completion of shacharis is sometimes delayed, and even if one starts hodu and baruch sheamar before chatzos, one might continue and start the amidah after chatzos
I'm asking what specific criteria are involved in if "starting before" is a reason to continue.
- If one can start before and daven a lot where they might start shemonah esray after chatzos, then what do they need to start until to be considered "in the middle of prayer "?
- And if so, is it possible that if someone does certain actions in the middle of "prayer", after starting but before reaching the amidah, then can that invalidate it and consider it as if one didn't start before? If so what specific types of actions would "invalidate" one's continuation of prayer? If not then to what extent would one hypothetically be able to "delay", after starting, and still be able to "continue" to finish?
Answer:
Hello,
- According to most poskim[1], one must finish shemona esrei in order for it to be considered before chatzos. The same applies with chazoras hashatz, it should be completed before chatzos. Merely davening brachos and some pesukei d’zimra will not count as starting before chatzos.
- It is important to note that essentially, we are not[2] allowed to do things before davening Shmona Esrei. After one started, we should not do anything else, in the middle, until after we finish davening. In fact, we are not even allowed to talk out. Regarding your question though, being that we have to start Shemona Esrei before chatzos, your question wouldn’t really be applicable, because it is not considered in middle of davening just because one is in middle of birkas kriyas shema, or pesukei dzimra.
Best wishes

Thanks for the answer
1. So in that case what happens when chatzos happens in the middle of birchos krias Shema?
2. If one realized chatzos is a couple minutes away and they won't be able to finish or even start shmoneh esray before, should one skip to amidah right in the middle of Shema?
3. If one didn't realize until after chatzos passed already, then should one just not daven and continue with ashrei from that point?
1. Stop right there. you can still say shema.
2. yes.
3. Don't daven then, rather wait until the time for mincha, and (only if you weren't grossly negligent to daven on time) then daven mincha, after davening shemona esrei, say ashrei again and another shemona esrei to make up for the mincha.
