Eating cholent with raw barley discovered inside

Question:

Lets say one is eating a fully cooked hot cholent on Shabbos and he notices a piece of barley in the cholent that looks raw. Even though this piece of barley was originally placed in the cholent with all the other ingredients prior to being cooked, it somehow didn't get cooked like the rest of the ingredients in the cholent.

1) So now that one discovers this barley, is one allowed to eat this piece of barley?

2)And if you are not allowed to eat it, are you allowed to eat the rest of the cholent? By using your spoon or fork to select the other items in the cholent, you may end up causing the other hot items of the cholent (including the piece of barley) to be moved, movement which might cause the barley to get cooked. So could this be a problem of hagasa?

Answer:

Hello,

Your question seems totally theoretical, because if the whole pot got fully cooked, it is practically impossible for something inside it to remain totally raw. Nevertheless, for your theoretical question…

  1. If it is edible, it may be eaten, if it isn’t edible, why do you want to eat it?
  2. The issue of hagasa even according to the Rema is only in the original kli rishon, not in your plate, so you have no problem eating the rest of the cholent. There is no need to be concerned that maybe a piece of barley isn’t cooked when you take the cholent out on Shabbos
