Question:
Dear Rabbi,
In a wedding the groom breaks a glass that presumably I think he bought himself or was provided.
If the groom who may be a glass blower in his trade can use a glass of his own create. It seems off to me but I await the halacha you can add.
Answer:
Hello,
The reason for breaking the glass is to remember that we are exile, and at every happy occasion we remember that our joy can not be complete, until the Holy temple is rebuilt. Therefore, a glass is broken as a symbol, that out joy is not complete. The glass can be provided by anyone, and it does not have to be specifically owned by the groom. He may not however break someone else’s glass and ruin it without their permission.
Best wishes
