Question:
Re:
אישה נידה
- what is the semiological meaning of the word נידה?
Highly Esteemed Rabbonim of The Din Online,
Thank You very much for illucidating various aspects of The Holy Torah! Your insights into The Torah learning are truly fathoming.
...I was always questioning, when reading the passages about the female physiological being - cycle: why the word "nida - נידה" is being translated, as "impurity"?!
How the manifestation of Jewish Womanhood, which does health wise, physiologically indicate the ability of Beit Yakov - Israel - Jewish Nation to procreate... How this process could be presented with the literary - epistolary contempt and distancing aloofness? With the word "impurity"?
I looked in the dictionary for the translations of the word "impurity". And there were not any even slight closeness with the letters "נ-ד-ה".
But this word "נידה" did echo the linguistical association with the following words:
ניד / נע -
moveable, moving;
נייד -
mobile;
This semiological digits of The Hebrew Language do present the process of movement, of life enactment as opposed to the statutory state and stagnation.
Should - must the wording "אישה נידה" be translated as "the woman in the process of physiological movement / the woman in the process of life / the woman, whose organism and bodily molecules are moving signifying procreation"?..
What is the original semiological meaning of the word "נידה" in Hebrew language?
Thank You very much for Your answer!
בכבוד רב,

Answer:
Hello,
The idea is that she is separated, or banned (due to her impurity) from her husband regarding relations, and from other people regarding if someone ends up touching her. See Rashi Leviticus 15-19.
