Question:
Hello,
I recently changed the strap on my tefilin shel yad. I noticed that the strap was shedding (the non-painted part) tiny pieces when the strap is rubbed. I went back to the tefilin store and they said that all their straps shed for the first few weeks and that this is normal to happen. However, I was wondering whether I need to be worried about sheimos/geniza regarding these small pieces that are shedding.
Thank you very much.
Answer:
Hello,
You are bringing up an interesting point! Indeed, it would be sheimos, however there is no need for you to go crazy over this. I would suggest that you keep a small sandwich bag with your tefillin, and if you happen to notice something, put it into the bag. Otherwise, you don’t have to be concerned, or get OCD over it.
Best wishes
