Food products unfit for human consumption

Question:

Rabbi,

I have a strange question, but I want to take this opportunity to learn. I accidentally swallowed a piece of a disposable fork that broke off. The fork was a biodegradable type which includes plant starch in some manner, but there is no actual ingredients on the package as it is not food. Aside from medical considerations, are there any kashrut concerns? Naturally, there is nothing to be done now, but I’m curious how someone should think about these situations through the lens of kashrut. The disposable cutlery was not kosher certified. I would assume that anything in the piece would be considered unfit for human consumption, or at worst, food that imparts an undesirable taste.

Thank you!

Answer:

Hello,

Since a plastic fork is neither food nor edible, it presents no kashrus concerns.

Best wishes
