Question:
Is there an inyan/ minhag to turn off the lights in the room the Menorah is lit? Thank you!
Answer:
Hello,
I am not aware of any specific minhag to turn off the lights in the room where the menorah is lit. If anything, the opposite would seem appropriate. If there is no shamash, other lights should be turned on, and even when there is a shamash, it is preferable to have an additional light on.
As a side point, when I was growing up, once everyone had left the room, the lights in the room where we lit were turned off. However, I believe this was simply to save electricity, or to prevent people from seeing into our windows.
Best wishes
