Donation that was never honored

Question:

Thank you for all you do for the klal.
I made a significant donation over 20 years ago for a campaign for a new building in Jerusalem (I live in America).
I was to receive a beautiful plaque and dedication for my donation, which was made in the honor of my grandmother, of blessed memory. I just visited the building for the first time since I gave this gift and to my shock/surprise there was no plaque or acknowledgment of my donation (it was supposed to be a dedication plaque for the building’s balcony).
This dedication was very meaningful and important to me, and for over 20 years I thought it was being displayed.
What is the halacha please?
Am I entitled to my money back?
Thank you.

Answer:

Hello,
It is very frustrating that the acknowledgment of your donation wasn't made. However, the main reason for your donation, to help your beloved grandmother’s soul in the world to come, was accomplished. In shomayim, they know you donated the money, even if there isn't a plaque to state it. (In fact, it is an even greater mitzva when the tzedakah is done in private.) Nevertheless, it is understandable that you made a significant donation, and the plaque should indeed acknowledge this. From a halachic angle, you can demand that they put up the plaque now, and if they do, it is still considered that they fulfilled their obligation. If they don't, then you would have a claim against them if it was clear that the donation is conditional on a plaque being erected.
Best wishes
