Question:
If the DUD SHEMESH (in Israel) was left ON (the red light switch), what can be done?
It is NOT electricity cost, but the ruining of the DUD or it's ELEMENT for being on for more than 3 hours STRAIGHT that is the concern!
I know a goy cannot be hinted or asked to do an ASSUR melacha for the JEW'S BENEFIT...the only concern I guess is a ruined item (in a rented apartment) I do not think a dud will blow up, but I have experienced the element blowing out when left on for 5 hours once. thanks
Answer:
If there is no concern that it could explode or cause a fire—and that appears to be the case at present—then the issue is purely one of monetary loss. We are not permitted to ask a gentile to perform a melacha on Shabbos in order to prevent financial loss. Therefore, my recommendation would be to leave it as is, and, IY”H, any loss incurred as a result of not shutting it off will be considered a Shabbos expense, for which you will be reimbursed.
Best wishes
