Winding watch and opening door

Question:

It is understood that winding a watch on the Sabbath is prohibited, as it constitutes a violation of Sabbath laws. Nevertheless, we routinely use the bathroom and engage mechanisms such as door knobs, which are sometimes even locked and thus involve additional mechanisms.
Why, then, is winding a watch forbidden, when it appears analogous to operating a simple mechanical device such as a door knob?

Answer:

This is an excellent question. The distinction lies in the nature of the action performed. When one winds a watch, one initiates the mechanism that gives the device its functionality; prior to winding, the springs lie dormant and the watch does not operate. By winding it, one essentially restores its ability to function, an act considered as 'fixing' or 'repairing' according to halachic principles. In contrast, when turning a bathroom door knob, one is not enabling or repairing a mechanism, but merely altering its state from open to closed. The door and knob remain fully operational before and after the action; no repair or creation of functionality takes place.
With best regards,
