Microwave

Question:

Hello and thank you for reading my question!
I have two questions.
1. I am renting a house, and I don’t use the microwave, so I never koshered or cleaned it. The previous tenant was an Orthodox rabbi, so I know it’s kosher, but I’m not sure whether it was used for dairy or meat. I had a guest over, and she heated water in a dairy ceramic mug in the microwave without knowing. Is this a problem? Do I need to reach out to the previous family in case the microwave wasn’t dairy?
2. I was cooking noodles in a pan I had just used for meat, and by accident a tiny noodle flew over and landed on a wooden cutting board. I rinsed it quickly. Is this a problem to use?

Answer:

  1. If the microwave was clean, there would be no need to kasher the mug. In the future, you can kasher the microwave by placing a clean bowl inside and heating water for a few minutes. While we usually don’t kasher utensils between dairy and meat, once a person acquires a utensil from someone else, it is allowed to change its status.
  2. The cutting board is permitted to use and isn’t meaty.

Best wishes

  1. Thank you! I see, I didn’t personally clean the microwave, it looks pretty clean except that I found a couple sesame seeds inside but I’m guessing they cleaned after renting the house, so would you say is ok to use my mug?

    1. If, as you say, that the walls are clean, then yes.

  2. Sorry for the back and forth.
I checked with the previous tenants and they said the microwave was used for meat. The dishes my friend used to heat water inside was dairy mugs. It’s been about 7 months nobody used the microwave. I’m checking the inside and it looks clean like if someone wiped it but not like thoroughly washed, there’s tiny little spots and wasn’t perfectly clean. So then I would have to throw away my ceramic mugs?

      1. Sorry I didn’t understand this :)
So I don’t need to kasher the mug and I am able to use it or is it better to dispose (it’s ok if you think is the best) thank you so much!!
