Question:
We have heard there is an idea (kabbalistic?) that it is better not to sleep with your feet facing the doorway as this is the direction that a corpse faces. Could you clarify this please? Also, we have 3 doorways to our bedroom, one is the main entry, one is to a bathroom ensuite and one is a side door to outside which is rarely used and which is blocked by an armchair. Does this issue arise if we face our feet to the side door or ensuite door, or only the door entering the room?
Answer:
Hello,
The custom you describe is practiced by people (when possible), and the popular reason, as you wrote, is that a corpse is faced toward the door of the room and taken out that way. It is hard to give an authoritative clarification because there isn’t much written on this. I would say that the only door to be careful about would be the main door of the room, as that is the only direction a corpse (c”v) would be taken.
I did see a different idea on this topic. That is, there is a different idea to face the beds north-south, not east-west. If the door of one’s room is north or south, and in order to not sleep facing the door, it would mean facing the beds east-west, it is better to face the door than to have the beds east-west.
Best wishes
