Metal mezuzah cover

Question:

An answer DinOnline gave for cutting tzitzis was: "Tzitzis should preferably not be cut with metal, (scissors, knife or razor) and if possible it is better with the person’s teeth. The reason not to cut them with metal is similar to the idea of not cutting the mizbeach with metal. Since the mizbeach’s purpose is to lengthen a person’s life and metal shortens it, therefore we don’t cut the mizbeach with metal." Is the same true for putting a mezuzah in a metal cover, since a mezuzah also lengthens our days and metal shortens it? If not, please explain.

Answer:

Hello,

Interesting point. The poskim do not mention any such prohibition regarding the mezuza.  There prohibition is specifically not to cut the mezbeach with metal. Metal was allowed on the mezbeyach, and this prohibition is limited to cutting. Therefore it is permitted to place a mezuza in a metal case.

Best wishes
