Question:
Someone was chewing gum before shekiyah on shabbas, and then shekiyah came. Can they continue chewing, or once shekiyah comes, can you eat before Havdalah? I found in the Mishnah Berurah that one can eat up to half an hour before tzeis hakochavim, so it seems you can eat even after shekiyah, not as part of a meal. Is this correct? Thank you
Answer:
Hello,
Generally, we are makpid from shekiyah not to eat[1] or drink anything, except water, even when it is more than half an hour before tzeis, as we consider it a safek from then. The Mishna Berura only allows one to eat after shkiya if it is more than half an hour before tzeis, if the person is really hungry.
There is, however, another aspect here. Theat shewing gum isn’t really eating or drinking, therefore it would be permitted.
Best wishes
