Insurance Deductible

Question:

I had an accident in December 2025. In January 2026, I changed my insurance deductible from $1,000 to $200. My mother informed the insurance company that the accident occurred in January 2026, which was not true. The accident actually happened in December.

The insurance company conducted a lengthy investigation. They were unable to find evidence that the accident happened earlier, and today, July 1, 2026, they approved the claim.

My mother wants to move forward and repair the car. I am concerned that accepting the insurance payment under these circumstances may be considered stealing or insurance fraud. I am unsure whether it matters that the insurance company is Progressive and not necessarily Jewish-owned, although there may be Jewish shareholders.

My question is whether I have an obligation to contact the insurance company and tell them the truth. Doing so would mean contradicting my mother and could cause her significant distress. There is also a concern that she could face criminal consequences related to insurance fraud.

What is the proper approach according to Halacha?

Answer:

Hello,

Although you are correct, that it is stealing, however from your angle, you should not say anything to the insurance company.

Best wishes
