Question:
One of the Takonos Chazal instituted as a Zecher Le'Churban, is not to listen to music (siman 560, seif 3; see MB sk 14 and 15). Whilst clearly there are some leniencies (it only applies to royals, or in larger festive meals, Zorech Mitzva, mental health) , I wonder how the current situation can be explained and halachlically validated: Music is everywhere, always and this takono seems to have disappeared completely. I fail to understand how many of us, who generally are meticulous about their observance and are medakdek on all halochos, seem to have no concern at all for this halocho pessuka. Why is this?
(Note: I am aware of some Kulos such as mental health and limmud zechusim which are quoted. This will only answer part of the question and not the main issue)
Answer:
Hello,
Your point has some validity to it; see Piskei Teshuvos 560-11, which discusses this. As a side point, even with all the music we have around nowadays, how many people still suffer from depression and anxiety…
Best wishes
