I am taking an online course for which I paid. The organizers sent out a link to be able to view recordings of classes. I did not see any option to be able to download the classes, from which I deduce that their intent is that students be able to watch the classes but not download them. However, I have a program which can download them. Do I need to ask for permission to download the classes or may I go ahead and download (assuming I would use them for private purposes and not share them with anyone else)?

You should ask permission, as many times, for various reasons, the person giving the class does not allow it.
