Someone wearing a crucifix in your home

Question:

Dear Dinonline,

My mom is recovering from surgery and is heavily dependent and reliant on a specific nurse who is in our home all week.

It has been extremely hard for my mom to find a good nurse, and my mom's health and recovery is always on my mind, so I am trying to keep things running smoothly, but this nurse is openly wearing a cross or crucifix around her neck in plain view.

What are the halachas about this? Are we forbidden to say certain blessings or do certain mitzvahs when she is in the room wearing this cross around her neck?

Thanks for your help and guidance!

Answer:

Hello,

I understand your feelings about this, but all things considered, if you have a good nurse, keep her, even though she is wearing the symbol of avoda zara around her neck. The only thing to be careful about is not to daven shemona esrei in front of her, and surely not to bow when she is facing you. Other than that, you have to be careful regarding yayin nesech and don't have any open non-mevushal wines around.

Best wishes
