Question:
Hello Rabbi,
In which parts of davening must one not respond to a parent or rabbi ( or any respectable figure), no matter how important they are? I would like to avoid talking during davening as much as possible, but I would like to ensure I am not being rude while doing so.
Thank you
Answer:
Hello,
The custom nowadays is not to respond to a parent, a Rabbi, etc., from the beginning of “Pesukei d’zimra” (Boruch Sheamar) until after Shemona Esrei. It is not considered rude, because you are currently talking to Hashem, and if anything, responding the other way is rude. Talking out is no worse than disrupting an important phone conversation, because someone wants to say hello and talk to you. Right now, you can’t, because it is rude to disrupt your important meeting. See sources
Best wishes
