Diapers on Shabbos

Question:

Our disposable diapers have a small perforated section where parts of the diaper are lightly connected. The diaper can be used without intentionally tearing it, but when I normally unfold/open the diaper to put it on the baby, the perforation automatically separates on its own. Is it okay to use these diapers normally on Shabbos, even though that perforated section will inevitably come apart? Or do they need to be pre-opened before Shabbos?

Answer:

Hello,

It depends on why the two parts of the diaper are stuck together. If they are stuck because they were essentially one piece that wasn’t fully separated, you have to separate them before Shabbos. However, it is very common that the two parts are stuck together simply due to pressure, which causes the two pieces of plastic to appear attached. That is not an issue, as you are not completing the formatting of the diaper, and in that case, there would be no need to do it before Shabbos.

Best wishes
