In every shul there are various types of סידורים (in print etc.) Now; I come early and I know one of my friends prefers a particular סידור, There is another man who also prefers this one and there is only “one “! so am I allowed to take it and reserve it for my friend who comes usually after the other man Of course there are plenty of other סידורים
Answer:
Thank you for your question.
You should not take that siddur for your friend since it is hurting the other person. The reason is because it is considered “tofes l’baal chov, b’makom shechav l’achrini”. This halacha is that if there are two people that have an equal claim to something, that one person may not take it for someone else, (when he is not having any benefit from it) since it is harming the second person. In a different scenario, such as a father taking the siddur that his child likes, and it will encourage him to daven better, then he is allowed to take it because he himself has benefit from it.
As a side point, although you are not obligated to do this. But if you would buy the shul another siddur of this type, so that both your friend and the other person can have one, this would be a chesed for the shul, and bringing shalom to Klal Yisroel.
