Torah learning in the street

Question:

I walk a lot on shabbat. Am I allowed to recite words of torah while walking to make my time more productive and to direct my thoughts to more positive things or is there issue of reciting torah in impure spots? Does it matter if I continuously walk and not stop? Thank you

Answer:

You most definitely can recite words of torah while walking, in fact this is a commandment that we mention twice every day “ודברת בם …ובלכתך בדרך”, “and speak in Torah when you walk on the road”. If, however you encounter smelly garbage that is not covered, then you would have to stop when it is within six feet of you, or you can see it in front of you. Walking continuously will not affect this, however the quicker you walk past it, the quicker you can start talking in Torah again.
