Borrowed Ipod Broke

I borrowed my sisters ipod for a year while i was away in Israel. One day I was using it and the ipod shut off- somethimg in the internal system of the ipod broke. It was not something that i did to the ipod it was the ipod itself, i had no control over it. do I halachicly have to buy her a new ipod?

Answer:

You are exempt from paying.

Although a borrower is generally responsible for all damages even without negligence, this is an exception called “meis machmas melacha” which means it broke in the course of normal warranted usage. In that case even a borrower is exempt.
