Wishing Merry Christmas

Question:

Hi,
Is there, according to halacha, a problem with wishing someone a Merry Christmas? Does it matter if they say it first or if I initiate?
Thank you very much!

Answer:

It is controversial if saying x-mas is permitted or not. According to some poskim it essentially means the mass of the anointed one, which is a term of honor for avoda zara, and shouldn’t be mentioned. Others say that it is merely the name of their holiday and permitted. Therefore it is preferred to answer them when greeted this way by saying seasons greetings.
