Dear Rabbi Pfeffer Shlita
Jaffa oranges are exported to Chutz Laaretz and unfortunately those that we receive here in South Africa, are not under any rabbinic supervision, what is the halocha regarding these? Must one assume them to be orlah and forbidden?
Answer:
There is no concern in regular Jaffa (Shamouti) oranges for orlah; the percentage of orlah for this type of oranges is exceedingly low.
Note that there are types of oranges that have a higher percentage of orlah (such as Newhall).
Of course, there will be an obligation of separating terumos and maasros, without a berachah.
Best wishes.
