Few questions in regards to making a siyum
Why is making a siyum on a chelek of Torah such a “chashuvah” thing?
Is someone that listens to a shiur on gemorah and concentrates, follows along well, and learns something from it — can they make a siyum when they ‘finish’ the mesecta?
Answer:
A siyum is a great thing because of the achievement it celebrates.
Whenever a great enterprise is completed, there is cause for celebration. This is true for general matters such as completing a degree, completing the publication of a book, and so on. And it is all the more true for a spiritual enterprise such as the study of Torah.
The general ruling of many poskim (though there is a well known dispute about the matter) is that Torah study even without speaking the words out loud constitutes Torah study.
A siyum can certainly be made on it.
