Removals on Shabbos

We are planning a move…can we use a Jewish (non-frum) moving company, knowing that it is more than likely they will be moving our stuff on Shabbos?

Thanks.

Answer:

You can use the company, and it is better than using a non-Jewish company.

Provided you don’t ask them to move the things on Shabbos, and provided there is no reason that they should move the things on Shabbos — meaning that there is plenty of time to move the things on Friday, Sunday, or some other day — there is no prohibition for you if they choose to move the things on Shabbos (although this halachah is stated formally with regard to a non-Jew, it will apparently apply to a Jew, too).

However, it is right to ask them to refrain from doing so, thereby ensuring that the violation of Shabbos does not take place.

It wouldn’t be a good feeling to know that your new home was furnished by violation of the Shabbos.

Best wishes.
