Hataras Nedarim in Changing Nusach

Kavod HaRav:

Does a baal teshuva (tinok shenishba) who davened nusach ashkenaz from the time he became frum (many years) need to do hataras nedarim if changing to davening nusach sfardi (eda hamizrach) does the same apply to changing minhagim? if hatara is necessary, can he simply have kavana during one of the ‘public’ hatarat nedarim that is done 40 days before rosh hashanah and yom kippur? Or does it require an private beit din and to mention specifics?

Thank you.

Answer:

There is no need for hataras nedarim in changing from one nusach to another. The question is not a question of a neder, but rather a question of which is the right nusach for the person in question.

Thus, Rav Moshe Feinstein discusses changing from one nusach to another (concerning switching back to Nusach Ashkenaz), as do other poskim, and makes no mention of the issue of hataras nedarim.

If a person was hitherto unaware of his family tradition, and now understands that because of his family background he should be davening with the Sephardi nusach, there is thus no need for hataras nedarim.
