Double Cover for Food

I read in many seforim that when using a non kosher oven (i.e. on holiday) one should double wrap (some say hermetically) the container with food and it would be then allowed to be used in that oven. where is the source of the double wrapping since the remoh clearly allows to bake in the same oven as a bake kosher and non kosher food together as long as one of them is covered? no mention is made of double covering anywhere?

Answer:

There is no ‘formal’ source for a double covering, and wherever a double covering is mentioned, one covering is actually enough.

The reason why a double wrapping is made is to ensure that the cover is properly sealed. Many coverings are very thin, and though they provide a good seal, they are susceptible to holes, so that a double cover is a wise precaution.

Best wishes.

  1. this doesnt quite add up to me. i always thought the double cover was in case oven is dirty (beyn) or zaya or anything else then only outer layer would become asuur – leaving bottom layer intact – kosher. otherwise beyn bleeyois would go straight through one layer – with 2 its like pots touchining and one wont treif up the other.
    am i wrong?

  2. Yoeli. Food absorbed in the oven will not detach from the walls unless steam comes up from the food being baked. So if it’s covered this doesn’t apply. the Mechaber in 108 clearly allows to bake 2 items meaty and milky providing they are in separate vessels (not covered!), and Remoh is more stringent and requires that ONE of them should be covered. NOWHERE it is mentioned that double wrapping is required
